The Idea
One afternoon while I was staring at my desktop, I was struck with a thought: is it possible to mimic this and create an OS-like experience inside of a browser? Noting the placement of icons, subtle animations, colors, and shadows, I set to work to create my own little OS-inspired playground called nextOS.
The Result
For nextOS, I decided to go with a monochromatic theme focusing on shades of black, white, and gray. I wanted nextOS to have a slightly mysterious atmosphere, resembling a secret website you found by accident while browsing the early 2000s internet.
A prominent design feature of nextOS is its dithered, smoky monochrome background which resembles low-res images found on 2000's era websites.
Another striking feature is the subtle addition of blur found in the buttons, taskbar and window backgrounds of nextOS, which give a sophisticated and slightly natural look.
Lastly, the addition of skeumorphic, frutiger aero-esque and macOSX / iOS6 inspired icons in the taskbar completes the early 2000s mysterious website design, enchanting the user and asking them to…
